AYSO HEY COACH! Newsletter

Welcome to "Hey Coach!"

This newsletterisintended for new and returning coaches to receive tips and tricks for coaching AYSO soccer. For inquires or concerns, pleaseemail us.

See you out on the field!

Q: If we can’t conduct in-person training, how can we certify our coaches?

The AYSO Programs and Education Team and the AYSO Coach Council have adopted the following guidelines for Fall to accommodate the current situation:
  1. If you can teach in-person, do it! There areoperational guidelinesto ensure a safe environment.
  2. For Fall 2020, to be certified to coach, coach candidates must have taken the applicable age group online pre-course module as a minimum requirement.
  3. Additionally, if you can’t teach in-person, there is a new virtual 12U classroom session (updated instructor PPT and Lesson Plan) available on AYSOU, as well as a 15-minute instructor tutorial video.
What does the new 12U Virtual Classroom session entail?

Our goal was to support Regions in training volunteers for the new reality, lowering a potential return-to-play barrier. A brief overview:
  • Recognize the difference between online (independent study) and virtual (instructor-led)
  • Redesigned classroom session for virtual delivery using ZOOM video communication platform (or similar platform if preferred)
  • 2 x 60-minute modules
  • 1-hour pre-course online module still required
  • Break-out rooms, collaboration and group presentations
  • Uses KAHOOT for entry quiz and closing quiz
  • Embedded coaching video review and guided questioning to cover and gauge coaching awareness and methodology
  • Engage and educate

Director of Sport and Development, Scott Snyderstated, “Our goal has been to identify the obstacle and present practical solutions. Virtual education can be invaluable to engage and educate our volunteers. Longer-term this can also be a valuable resource for rural areas who might have instructor shortages. We will test and measure our initial efforts and continue to develop resources.”

We know you are anxious to return to the field and AYSO has provided Regions withReturn-to-Play Guidelinesto help design programming to ensure a safe Regional/Club Return-to-Play this fall. But please note that AYSO Return-to-Play guidance does not supersede any state or local restrictions in place. Specific return to play open dates will be decided on by your local volunteer leadership. Please contact your Region’s Regional Commissioner for more information on Fall Registration.
